Handwritten cards for people in solitary confinement.

We are a student-led nonprofit at the Bronx High School of Science. Write a card, and we’ll work to get it to someone who could use a kind word.

About Us

The Solitary Connection Project was founded by Liam Beekman as a sophomore at the Bronx High School of Science. Today it has more than 20 volunteers in New York City and Croatia.

Our goal is simple: make sure people in solitary confinement know someone is thinking of them. We collect handwritten cards that follow facility mail rules, and we’re building partnerships with organizations that can deliver them.

How It Works

  1. Write a card with a message of encouragement or support, following the guidelines below.

  2. Drop it off at Bronx Science or mail it to us (details below).

  3. We review every card and work to get it to someone experiencing solitary confinement.

What You Need

All you need is paper and a pen. We provide the envelope.

Guidelines

Before You Write:

  • Use an 8.5 × 11 sheet folded in half or a similar-sized card.

  • Plain paper, construction paper, or cardstock are all okay.

  • Do not use glitter, loose materials, peelable stickers, or lined notebook paper.

  • Do not include an envelope—we provide them.

  • Sign your first name at the bottom

What To Write

  • Please keep your message kind, positive, respectful, and appropriate.

  • Share encouragement, a favorite quote, or a little about your day or interests.

  • Don’t ask about someone’s case or why they are incarcerated.

  • For your privacy, don’t include your last name, address, phone number, or social media.

Mail Requirements

  • Use black or blue ink only

  • No perfume, lipstick, stains, or glued items

  • No QR codes, barcodes, or hidden messages

  • Avoid symbols that could be interpreted as gang-related

  • Remember that all cards may be screened by facility staff
